part of Standard Specifications for Concrete Structures
The English translation of “Materials and Construction,” which is one part of the JSCE Standard Specifications for Concrete Structures, has been completed. This 444-page volume has 20 chapters. Chapters 1–12 cover the general principles for concrete construction. Chapters 13–20 cover special kinds of concrete and concrete structures. Three
other volumes of the Standard
Specifications for Concrete Structures have already been translated into
English: Structural Performance
Verification, Seismic Performance Verification and Maintenance. The new volume is available now for 2400 yen

n Recommendation on
Environmental Performance Verification for Concrete Structures (Draft)
Environmental issues have become a major concern for civil engineers, including concrete researchers and engineers. In
November 2005, the Concrete Committee of Japan Society of Civil Engineers
published the “Recommendation on Environmental Performance Verification for
Concrete Structures (Draft).” Included in the Draft are the fundamental
viewpoints and procedures for reducing the environmental impact resulting
from the design, selection of materials, construction,
maintenance/management, dismantling, and recycling of concrete structures.
The Committee is now working on the English translation. Information concerning its publication will be announced later. For detailed information about the contents, check here(pdf). n Special Topics: 100-year-Old Concrete
Structures in Japan
The Portland Cement Factory was established in Tokyo in 1873,
about 50 years after Portland cement was invented in Britain. A concrete breakwater
was constructed in Otaru Port, Hokkaido, in the years just before and after
the turn of the 20th century, and the first reinforced concrete bridge was
constructed in Kyoto in the early part of the 20th Century. We will
introduce concrete structures in Japan that are still sound 100 years after
their construction. (1) Japan's 100-year-old Otaru Port breakwater: the longest
