PREFACE

This is an English translation of the report of the JSCE (Japan Society of Civil Engineers) Research Subcommittee on Continuous Fiber Reinforcing Materials (CFRM) chaired by Prof. H. Okamura, which was originally published in Japanese in the Concrete Library No.72 by the JSCE. "Design Concept for Concrete Members using CFRM", "Test Methods for CFRM", and "Concept for Durability of CFRM", which are parts of the results obtained by the committee, had already been translated into English and published in The Concrete Library International, Vol.19. The last part of the result, however, has not yet been translated into English due to limitations of time and finance.

After the completion of the work by the research committee, the Concrete Committee of JSCE has organized a second research committee on CFRM, accepting the trust of CCC Research Association (Association of Composite Material Using Continuous Fiber for Concrete Reinforcement) and ACC Club (Advanced Composite Cable Club). The second committee has determined, as its first task, the translation of the remaining part into English for the convenience of worldwide researchers and engineers engaged in CFRM. The remaining part is a state-of-the-art report on application of CFRM to concrete structures, based on the various papers and reports published in Japan covering the research up to 1991.

In the production and utilization of CFRM, I believe Japan is one of leading countries in the world, and hope this booklet will contribute to the further development of CFRM.
