President of Hybrid Research Institute, Inc. |
Dr. Ikeda was the first person in Japan to investigate corrugated steel web PC bridges and PC bridge piers. He also studied the shear failure of RC structures and the dynamic visualization of their seismic response. His significant results in these fields were reflected in a number of standards, leading to enhancements in the safety of concrete structures. His work has also been used in a number of bridge construction projects. He was the first in the world to propose the "Performance-Creative Design” concept and established rules for the design and construction of concrete structures based on it. Dr. Ikeda also contributed significantly to recovery from the Great Hanshin Earthquake of 1995. He was a member of the investigative committee set up following the disaster by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, and was chairperson of the committee for implementing emergency measures for the Kobe route of the Hanshin Expressway, which was established by the Hanshin Expressway Company. Some of the work of these committees relied on his research. At JSCE, Dr. Ikeda has promoted development of the society through both his research and management efforts. He has been a director of JSCE and also worked actively on the concrete committee, the structural engineering committee, the hybrid structure committee and the earthquake engineering committee. Further, he drafted the first internal regulations relating to our revision process for research papers and contributed to implementing the JSCE revision system, thereby enhancing the quality of JSCE journals.
