It is my honor to be elected Chairperson of the Concrete Committee of the Japan Society of Civil Engineers (JSCE) from April 2015 for a two-years term. I am aware of the great responsibility to manage the periodic revision of the Standard Specification of Concrete Structures according to current advanced concrete engineering, and also to bridge academia and industry in order to meet society's needs.

Last year, the JSCE celebrated its 100th anniversary and declared some goals as the next century's mission. "To broaden our discipline and to pass over the borders" is the core of these goals. Expressing my full support and agreement and together with all of the committee members, I hope to gather the fruits of these efforts in more concrete ways. We face difficult times and many current problems may not be solved solely by the concrete engineering profession. We must bravely broaden the technological borders and open our minds to other areas. The concrete committee warmly welcomes interdisciplinary actions as do I.

The membership structure of the committee includes all of Japan's affiliations and professions, and all members are requested to behave and think as a Civil and Concrete Engineer according to the code of ethics. I believe that this is the best long-term stance for dealing with specifications, recommendations and standards. At the same time, I would like the members to personally take a variety of actions while recognizing and respecting each other's capabilities.

Infrastructure management is becoming a key issue for the committee. Planning, design, construction, control, maintenance, and recycling should be conceptually and pragmatically amalgamated. Let us work closely together to revise the Standard Specification and build a strong bond of steel, geotechnical, and environmental engineering.

Wishing all of you success and good health in 2015!
