Chairperson Shigeo Takahashi (Port and Airport Research Institute)
The Committee on Civil Engineering in the Ocean (CCEO) has contributed to the development of technology for ocean engineering by organizing research projects and seminars and publishing their outcomes since its establishment in 1970 as one of the research-oriented committees of JSCE, the Japan Society of Civil Engineers.
Our main objective is to encourage the development of technology in terms of utilization, environmental conservation and disaster prevention in the ocean with particular emphasis on practical applications in the field.
Our major activities are to hold an annual symposium and publish the CCEO journal. We have special seminars and subcommittees to discuss timely topics. In addition to these academic practices, we are trying to disseminate our maritime knowledge to the general public in various ways. For example, a summer maritime school is held during the annual symposium each year in collaboration with the local citizens.
Annual Symposium & Annual Journal |
The annual symposium, started in 1970, is an event at which engineers and
scientists can present and discuss their work. The proceedings of the symposium
were upgraded to the Annual Journal of Civil Engineering in the Ocean in
1985. This journal covers a wide range of maritime engineering areas from
oceans and coasts to ports and estuaries. Each paper is peer reviewed in
two steps--an abstract review followed by a full paper review to ensure
the publication of only high-quality papers.
The number of papers presented at the annual symposium has been steadily increasing. There were five papers at the first symposium in 1970, 33 papers at the 10th symposium in 1985, and 199 at the 32nd symposium in 2007. The symposium was always held in Tokyo until the one in Abashiri, Hokkaido in 1995. Since then, it has been held in cities across the country.
Innovation for the 21st Century |
Our senior members have made great efforts to advance the field and successfully
developed a wealth of technology resources for ocean engineering and sciences
since the inauguration of the committee. What is needed today is the innovation
of new technologies to meet the changing demands of the 21st century. To
encourage member activities toward this goal, we have established an innovation
subcommittee to consider and implement the following:
- Increasing discussions and communications among engineers and scientists
through CCEO, including this homepage
- Enhancing cooperation with engineers and scientists from other fields along
with recruiting and supporting young researchers
- Further enhancing the CCEO annual symposium
