Background

The International Committee on Pavement Technology (ICPT) is a non-profit non-governmental organization hosted by the Centre for Transportation Research of the National University of Singapore. The ICPT was established in 1992 under an agreement between the Centre for Transportation Research, National University of Singapore, and the Pavement Engineering Society (Singapore). The permanent secretariat of the ICPT is hosted by the Centre for Transportation Research, National University of Singapore.

Objective of ICPT

The objective of ICPT is to promote pavement technological advancement worldwide, with special emphasis in pavement technological development in developing countries, by encouraging exchange and transfer of pavement technology among professionals and researchers of different countries and regions, through organizing technology transfer activities such as international conferences.
The current focus of ICPT is on the fast developing East Asian regions, with special emphasis on encouraging interaction of pavement professionals and researchers among Asian countries, and exchanging of experience and technology with other parts of the world.

As of February 8, the number of full papers tentatively accepted for presentation was totally 118. Each author of the accepted paper was requested to rewrite the paper and submit it by 20 of March. Totally, 112 papers were resubmitted after their revisions.

Poster Display Corners

Poster display corners (mainly for comercial purposes) will run in the Middle-size hall during the Conference sessions (5pm 20th - 4pm 22nd July). A panel sized 0.9m width × 1.8m height will be prepared for each corner (The price is JPY30,000 for each panel). Also, a table will be prepared at each corner to place brochures, leaflets, flyers, samples, etc.

Attractive city Sapporo

Sapporo is the political and economic center city and is the capital of Hokkaido prefecture. It has been the fifth population in Japan that exceeds 1.8 million today since seven people in 1857. And the economic bloc population including the vicinity of Sapporo becomes about 3.4 million. Sapporo is the Olympic Winter Games host city in 1972 and is one of the host cities of the FIFA World Cup in 2002.
As for Hokkaido, the vast earth is enclosed in the sea, and then farm products and marine products are very delicious. People visit summering for rich green and to enjoy winter sports from not only Japan but also all over the world, then Sapporo is one of the most popular tourist cities in Japan. It is imaginable from the fact that the number of getting on and off guests exceeds 10 million between New Chitose Airport in Hokkaido and Tokyo International Airport and became the world's largest money-maker route in 2006.

DUTY FREE IMPORT

Personal effects and professional equipment can be brought into Japan duty free as long as the customs officer deems their contents and quantities reasonable. You can also bring in 400 cigarettes, 500 grams of tobacco or 100 cigars; 3 bottles of alcoholic beverages; 2 ounces of perfume; and gifts and souvenirs whose total market price is less than 200,000 yen or its equivalent. There is no allowance for tobacco or alcoholic beverages for persons aged 19 years or younger Firearms and other types of weapons, and narcotics are strictly prohibited.

INSURANCE

The organizer cannot accept responsibility for accidents that might occur. Delegates are encouraged to purchase travel insurance before leaving their home country. Insurance plans typically cover accidental loss of belongings, medical costs in case of injury or illness, and other possible risks of international travel.

CLIMATE

The temperature in Sapporo during the period of the conference ranges between 17ºC and 25ºC.

CURRENCY EXCHANGE

Only Japanese yen (¥) is acceptable at regular stores and restaurants. Certain foreign currencies may be accepted at a limited number of hotels, restaurants and souvenir shops. You can buy yen at foreign exchange banks and other authorized money exchangers on presentation of your passport.

TRAVELER'S CHECKS AND CREDIT CARDS

Traveler's checks are accepted only by leading banks and major hotels in principal cities, and the use of traveler's checks in Japan is not as popular as in some other countries. VISA, MasterCard, Diners Club, and American Express are widely accepted at hotels, department stores, shops, restaurants and nightclubs.

TIPPING

In Japan, tips are not necessary anywhere, even at hotels and restaurants.

ELECTRICITY

Electric current is uniformly 100 volts, AC, throughout Japan, but with two different cycles: 50 in eastern Japan including Sapporo and 60 in western Japan including Kyoto. Leading hotels in major cities have two outlets of 100 and 220 volts but their sockets usually accept a two-leg plug only.

SHOPPING

Shops and other sales outlets in Japan are generally open on Saturdays, Sundays and national holidays as well as weekdays from 10:00 to 20:00. Department stores, however, are closed on one weekday, differing by store, and certain specialty shops may not open on Sundays and national holidays.
